fighting for immigrant rights
ECCO has been working for the past year and a half to create a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrant workers, who have played a key role as essential workers during the COVID pandemic. Although our efforts to pass immigration reform through the Build Back Better plan got us closer to a pathway to citizenship than any other effort over the past eight years, unfortunately, the bill seems on its last breath. test link function
Shifting our focus to statewide work, ECCO is now working with the Driving Families Forward Coalition to pass the Family Work and Mobility Act, which would allow undocumented immigrants to obtain drivers’ licenses. PUTTING IMMIGRATION ON THE 2020 ELECTION AGENDA
In late August of 2019, hundreds of ECCO clergy and faith leaders walked 70 miles from Boston to the ICE Detention Center in Dover, NH to raise up the stories of immigrants that have died at the hands of ICE and our broken immigration system. We proclaimed that our immigration crisis is a moral crisis and called on all presidential candidates to make immigration a centerpiece of their presidential platforms.
After our walk, we got all the major Democratic presidential candidates to commit to our key demand:
“Will you commit that, if elected, you will end all detention and deportations until Congress passes just immigration reform?”
Thanks to our efforts, our demands became a centerpiece of President Biden’s immigration policy plan. Though his plan is strong, we must continue to pressure congress to pass President Biden’s proposals, including to create a pathway to citizenship for immigrant essential workers.
PROPHETIC ACTION IN THE FACE OF MORAL CRISIS
We continue to do this work to denounce the racist immigration system that dehumanizes Muslims, uses Black and Brown bodies for profit, cages children, and causes death. As we witness the horrific violence increasing towards those who are judged not to belong, Muslims, Jews, Black folks, immigrants, and others, we are called to act in the spirit of the Hebrew prophets - boldly, courageously, and creatively!
